Why do we prefer a convex mirror as a rear view mirror in vehicles?
Most Upvoted Answer
Why do we prefer a convex mirror as a rear view mirror in vehicles?
Introduction:
Rear view mirrors are an essential component of vehicles as they help drivers to observe the rear side of the vehicle while driving. There are two types of mirrors, convex and flat. However, convex mirrors are preferred as rear view mirrors in vehicles.

Advantages of Convex Mirrors as Rear View Mirrors:

1. Wider Field of View:
Convex mirrors have a curved surface that reflects light outwards, making the reflected image smaller than the actual object. This feature provides a wider field of view, allowing drivers to see a larger area behind them, reducing blind spots.

2. Better Visibility:
Convex mirrors are designed to provide a better view of the surroundings than flat mirrors. This is because they have a larger viewing angle, which means they can capture more details in a single glance. This feature enhances the visibility of the driver, especially while driving on busy roads.

3. Reduced Glare:
Convex mirrors have a reduced glare effect as they reflect light outward, making it easier to see objects in bright sunlight or when headlights of the vehicle behind are shining directly into the mirror.

4. Safety:
Convex mirrors are designed to improve safety by providing a wider field of view, better visibility, and reduced glare. This feature helps drivers to avoid accidents by detecting other vehicles, pedestrians or objects in their blind spots.

Conclusion:
Convex mirrors are preferred as rear view mirrors in vehicles because they provide a wider field of view, better visibility, reduced glare, and improved safety. These features are essential in reducing the risk of accidents, making driving safer and more comfortable.
