Chemical decomposition produced by passing an electric current through a liquid or solution containing ions is called electrolysisWhenever copper sulfate or CuSO4 is added to water, it gets dissolved in the water. As the CuSO4 is an electrolyte, it splits into Cu (cation) and SO4   (anion) ions and move freely in the solution.so we use cuso4 during electrolysis

It is process of splitting of water into its components- H2 and 02 gases using electricity.Use of CuSo 4 is not necessary. Its just used to facilitate electricity flow----Hope it helps
