Mg+O2----> MgO If the magnesium oxide left for a long period of time then it forms a layer of magnesium carbonate. As shown below - MgO +CO2 ——–> MgCO3Therefore, magnesium ribbon is rubbed with sand paper before its burning to remove the layer of MgO or MgCO3 so that it could burn easily Hope this help u dear!!!
