Testing whether the dissolution of a given salt in water is exothermic or endothermic

Introduction

When a salt is dissolved in water, energy is either released or absorbed. This energy change is known as enthalpy change. If the dissolution of a given salt in water releases energy, it is exothermic. On the other hand, if the dissolution of a given salt in water absorbs energy, it is endothermic.

Methodology

We can test whether the dissolution of a given salt in water is exothermic or endothermic by following these steps:

  1. Take a known quantity of the salt and weigh it accurately.

  2. Add the weighed salt into a known quantity of water in a calorimeter. A calorimeter is a device that measures the amount of heat absorbed or released during a chemical reaction or physical change.

  3. Stir the solution thoroughly and measure the initial temperature of the solution.

  4. Monitor the temperature of the solution continuously as the salt dissolves in water.

  5. When the temperature of the solution reaches a constant value, record the final temperature of the solution.

  6. Calculate the enthalpy change of the salt by using the formula: ΔH = q/m where q is the heat absorbed or released by the solution, m is the mass of the salt, and ΔH is the enthalpy change.

  7. If the enthalpy change is negative, the dissolution of the salt in water is exothermic. If the enthalpy change is positive, the dissolution of the salt in water is endothermic.

Conclusion

By following the above steps, we can test whether the dissolution of a given salt in water is exothermic or endothermic. This information is important in many chemical and industrial processes, as it can affect the rate and efficiency of these processes.
