Prior to the 19th century, revolutionary nationalism had taken place in 1789 in France. It abolished monarchy and established the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. The Bourbon kings who had been restored to power during the conservative reaction after 1815, were now overthrown by liberal revolutionaries who installed a constitutional monarchy with Louis Philippe at its head.Greek independence was supported by many revolutionaries in Europe. The English poet Lord Byron organised funds and later went to fight in the war for the Greeks, where he died of fever in 1824. Finally, the Treaty of Constantinople of 1832 recognised Greece as an independent nation.The greatest revolutions had taken place in Germany and Italy which led to their unification. In Italy, Mazzini, Garibaldi and Cavour played an important role in unifying the country.German unification was driven by Prussia and its leader Bismarck. Through a series of wars, the process of German unification was finally completed in 1871.
