Pharynx is a common passage of food and air. divided in to 3 types.They are 1.Nasopharynx 2.Oropharynx 3.laryngopharynx. NASOPHARYNX:upper part of pharynx. It has internal nares;Eustachian tubes and tonsils.Pharyngeal tonsils or adenoid is present on roof of pharynx. OROPHARYNX:middle part of the pharynx. Oral cavity opens in to it. An ovoid Palatine tonsil lies either side of oropharynx. LARYNGOPHARYNX:lower part of pharynx. leads in to oesophagus behind and in to larynx. upper end of oesophagus has UPPER OESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTER made up of voluntary muscle. Opening in to larynx is called GLOTTIS.It bears leaf like;cartilaginous flap;the EPIGLOTTIS. during swallowing,epiglottis covers the GLOTTIS to prevent the entry of food in to larynx.
