RBCs of all adult mammals are enucleated (non-nucleated) mostly concave and circular. Absence of nucleus in mammalian RBCs helps to accommodate maximum amount of haemogloblin by increase in surface area. Amphibian RBCs are the largest among vertebrates. It is nucleated, oval and biconvex. They have relatively less haemoglobin. Consumption of oxygen is relatively high due to the presence of cell organelles unlike mammalian RBCs.

Most mammalian red blood cells are highly evolved and have lost their nucleus. Unlike typical mammalian red blood cells, those from amphibians, such as frogs, contain a DNA-bearing nucleus that is visible in the center of the cell. all non-mammalian vertebrates have nucleated RBCs.
