A hormone is a chemical that acts as a messenger transmitting a signal from one cell to another. Hormones produce their effects on target tissues by binding to specific proteins called hormone receptors located in the target tissues only. Hormones regulate target tissue metabolism and hence physiological functions. On the basis of their chemical nature, hormones can be divided into groups :
  • Peptide, polypeptide, protein hormones (e.g., Insulin, glucagon, pituitary hormones, hypothalamic hormones, etc.)
  • steroids (e.g., cortisol, testosterone, estradiol and progesterone)
  • iodothyronines (thyroid hormones)
Amino-acid derivatives (e.g., epinephrine). Cortisol is a hormone that is produced by the adrenal gland in response to stress. It belongs to the class of steroid hormones, which are derived from cholesterol and are characterized by their ring structure. Cortisol plays an important role in regulating various physiological processes such as metabolism, immune response, and stress response. Insulin and glucagon are peptide hormones, which are composed of amino acids and are not derived from cholesterol. steroid hormone, any of a group of hormones that belong to the class of chemical compounds known as steroids; they are secreted by three “steroid glands”—the adrenal cortex, testes, and ovaries—and during pregnancy by the placenta. All steroid hormones are derived from cholesterol.
