The reaction of H2 gas with oxygen gas to form water is an example of

  • A:
      metatesis reaction
  • B:
      redox reaction
  • C:
      exothermic reaction
  • D:
      all of these reactions
The answer is C.
Verified Answer
The reaction of H2gas with oxygen gas to form water is an example ofA:...
Hydrogen is a highly reactive fuel. Hydrogen molecules violently react with oxygen when the existing molecular bonds break and new bonds are formed between oxygen and hydrogen atoms. As the products of the reaction are at a lower energy level than the reactants(i.e products are more stable), the result is an explosive release of energy and the production of water.
Its an example of exothermic reaction
It is an example of Combination reaction as 2 or more reactants combine to form a single product.

As in the given equation, the electrons are transferred from Hydrogen to Oxygen, hence Oxygen is reduced and electrons are accepted by Oxygen from Hydrogen, hence Hydrogen is oxidised .Now,both oxidation and reduction are going together, therefore it is also a Redox (Reduction- Oxidation reaction) reaction.

The reaction of H2gas with oxygen gas to form water is an example ofA:...
Exothermic reaction:
The reaction of H2 gas with oxygen gas to form water is an exothermic reaction. This means that the reaction releases energy in the form of heat.

Redox reaction:
The reaction of H2 gas with oxygen gas to form water is also a redox reaction. In this reaction, hydrogen is oxidized and oxygen is reduced. Hydrogen loses electrons and oxygen gains electrons.

Metathesis reaction:
The reaction of H2 gas with oxygen gas to form water is not a metathesis reaction. Metathesis reactions involve the exchange of ions or compounds to form new compounds.

All of these reactions:
While the reaction of H2 gas with oxygen gas to form water is not a metathesis reaction, it does exhibit both exothermic and redox reactions. Therefore, the correct answer is D, all of these reactions.

The reaction of H2gas with oxygen gas to form water is an example ofA:...
The reaction of hydrogen with oxygen to form water is exothermic because it liberates more energy than it absorbs. In reactions, there is usually bonds breaking which is endothermic and bond being made which is exothermic. The formation of covalent bond is highly exothermic. Since water molecules has covalent bonds (polar), formation of water is exothermic.
