Electric Charge and its SI Unit

Electric Charge: Electric charge is the physical property of matter that causes it to experience a force when placed in an electromagnetic field. It is a fundamental property of matter and it exists in two forms: positive and negative.

SI Unit of Electric Charge: The SI unit of electric charge is Coulomb (C). It is defined as the amount of electric charge carried by a current of one ampere flowing for one second. In simple words, it is the quantity of electricity transported in one second by a current of one ampere.

Relation between Coulomb and Ampere: Ampere is the unit of electric current and Coulomb is the unit of electric charge. The relation between the two is given as:

1 Coulomb = 1 Ampere x 1 second

This means that if a current of one ampere flows for one second, then the amount of charge transported is one Coulomb.

Other Units of Electric Charge: Apart from Coulomb, there are other units of electric charge used in different systems of measurement. Some of them are:

- Statcoulomb (esu): It is the CGS unit of electric charge and is defined as the amount of charge that exerts a force of one dyne on an equal charge placed at a distance of one centimeter.
- Franklin (Fr): It is another unit of electric charge and is defined as the amount of charge that repels an equal charge placed at a distance of one foot with a force of one pound.

However, Coulomb is the most widely used unit of electric charge in the SI system of measurement.
