Which of the following statements about Biomass as a source of energy ...
Biomass is a renewable energy resource derived from carbonaceous waste of various human and natural activities. It is derived from numerous resources including timber industries, agriculture crops, residue from forestry or agriculture, oil rich algae, organic component of municipal and industrial waste. Biomass energy is energy generated or produced by living or once-living organisms. The most common biomass materials used for energy are plants, such as corn and soy, above. The energy from these organisms can be burned to create heat or converted into electricity. It is a good substitute for conventional fossil fuels and releases the same amount of carbon dioxide on burning as burning fossil fuels. However, fossil fuels release carbon dioxide captured by photosynthesis over its formative years on the other hand biomass is formed by atmospheric carbon dioxide that does not increase quantity of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere making it carbon neutral. The carbon dioxide released by biomass is balanced by the carbon dioxide captured in its own growth. Hence option (a) is the correct answer. Burning biomass releases carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and other pollutants and particulates. If these pollutants are not captured and recycled, burning biomass can create smog.
