  • World War 2 (WWII) began in September 1939 with the German invasion of Poland and the subsequent declaration of war against Germany by Britain and France.
  • During the course of WWII, the international political situation altered considerably from the summer of 1940. The Battle of France in May 1940 resulted in the defeat (at the hands of Germany) and the fall of France in 1940. Thus the axis powers (Germany and Italy) started to gain an upper hand. The Axis powers grew aggressive in Britain and Europe.
  • On May 10, 1940, Winston Churchill became the Prime Minister, replacing Neville Chamberlain. Hence option (c) is not correct.
  • India’s role in imperial defense grew in importance on account of her resources, manpower, and economic potential. Thus Britain equipped herself with two strategies to keep the Congress (Indian National Congress in check), the first was a Revolutionary Movement’s Ordinance to crush civil resistance and a plan to pacify Congress with the promise of a grant of political concessions. The plan to pacify the Congress and enlist her support (at a time when France had been defeated by Germany and the Battle of Britain was about to begin) came in the form of an offer called the August Offer. It was offered by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Linlithgow. However, the offer of 1940 fell short of expectations. Hence option (b) is the correct answer.
  • The August Offer was an offer made by Viceroy Linlithgow in 1940 promising the expansion of the Executive Council of the Viceroy of India to include more Indians
  • In July 1940 Subhas Chandra Bose was arrested in connection with his involvement in the movement for the removal of the Holwell Monument in Calcutta. While in jail, he went on a hunger strike and was released in December 1940. After that, Bose's house in Calcutta was kept under surveillance. Thus he was house-arrested. Subhas Chandra Bose escaped (detention) from India in 1941 (which happened after the August Offer) and went to Germany via Afghanistan and the Soviet Union, to work for India's Independence. and the establishment of an advisory war council. He met Adolf Hitler in 1942. It is believed that Hitler during his only meeting with Bose in late May 1942 refused to entertain Bose's requests and facilitated a submarine voyage to East Asia. Hence option (a) is not correct.
  • In the East, Japan launched a surprise attack on the American fleet at Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941. It quickly overran the South East Asian countries like the Philippines, Indo-China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Burma. It occupied Rangoon in March 1942. War was brought to India’s doorstep.), President Roosevelt of the USA and President Chiang Kai-Shek of China as also the Labour Party leaders of Britain put pressure on Churchill to seek the active cooperation of Indians in the War. To secure this cooperation the British Government sent to India in March 1942 a mission headed by Cabinet minister Stafford Cripps. Hence option (d) is not correct.
