- World War 2 (WWII) began in September 1939 with the German invasion of Poland and the subsequent declaration of war against Germany by Britain and France.
- During the course of WWII, the international political situation altered considerably from the summer of 1940. The Battle of France in May 1940 resulted in the defeat (at the hands of Germany) and the fall of France in 1940. Thus the axis powers (Germany and Italy) started to gain an upper hand. The Axis powers grew aggressive in Britain and Europe.
- On May 10, 1940, Winston Churchill became the Prime Minister, replacing Neville Chamberlain. Hence option (c) is not correct.
- India’s role in imperial defense grew in importance on account of her resources, manpower, and economic potential. Thus Britain equipped herself with two strategies to keep the Congress (Indian National Congress in check), the first was a Revolutionary Movement’s Ordinance to crush civil resistance and a plan to pacify Congress with the promise of a grant of political concessions.
