We often see astronomers inside a manned satellite float instead of walking. What could be the possible reason behind this phenomenon?
  • a)
Earth's gravitational pull becomes zero at such a large distance from earth.
  • b)
Since walking becomes cumbersome inside a satellite, astronomers wear jetpacks to float.
  • c)
The astronauts have the same acceleration as the manned satellite.
  • d)
Space is a vacuum and there is no gravity in a vacuum.
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Reason Astronomers Float Inside a Manned Satellite:
There are several factors that contribute to astronomers floating inside a manned satellite instead of walking.

Acceleration of the Astronauts:
- The main reason astronomers float inside a manned satellite is that the astronauts have the same acceleration as the satellite itself.
- Objects inside the satellite experience the same free-fall acceleration as the satellite, causing them to float weightlessly.
- This phenomenon is known as microgravity and is a result of the satellite and everything inside it being in constant free-fall around the Earth.

Effect of Microgravity:
- In microgravity, objects are weightless and do not experience the effects of gravity as strongly as they do on Earth.
- This allows astronauts to float inside the satellite and move around more freely than they would be able to on Earth.
- Walking becomes impractical in microgravity, so astronauts often use handrails or other tools to move around the satellite.

Conclusion:
- The reason astronomers float inside a manned satellite is due to the microgravity environment created by the satellite's acceleration.
- This unique environment allows astronauts to conduct experiments and navigate the satellite in ways that would not be possible under normal gravitational conditions.

We often see astronomers inside a manned satellite float instead of wa...
  • Weight of an object is the force with which the earth attracts it. We are conscious of our own weight when we stand on a surface since the surface exerts a force opposite to our weight to keep us at rest. When an object is in free fall, it is weightless and this phenomenon is usually called the phenomenon of weightlessness. In a satellite around the earth, every part and parcel of the satellite has an acceleration towards the center of the earth which is exactly the value of the earth’s acceleration due to gravity at that position. Thus in the satellite, everything inside it is in a state of free fall. This is just as if we were falling towards the earth from a height. Thus, in a manned satellite, people inside experience no gravity. Hence option (c) is the correct answer.
  • Earth's gravitational pull will become zero only at an infinite distance from Earth which is a hypothetical situation.
