Given an A.P. few of whose terms are x, y, 2, 4, 6, 8,………. What must be the values of x and y?
  • a)
    x = 2, y = -4
  • b)
    x = -2, y = 0
  • c)
    x = 0, y = -2
  • d)
    x = -4, y = 2
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Given an A.P. few of whose terms are x, y, 2, 4, 6, 8,……...
Arithmetic progression is a sequence of numbers such that the difference of any two successive members is a constant,d
AP is x, y, 2, 4, 6, 8,…
So we have 4-2=2,6-4=2 so we have d=2
So y=2-2=0
And x=0-2=-2

Given an A.P. few of whose terms are x, y, 2, 4, 6, 8,……...
Since the given terms are in AP, so, (y-x)=(2-y)=(4-2) Now, 2-y=4-2 => 2-y=2 => y=2-2=0 Again, y-x=2-y => 0-x=2-0 ..........(:.y=0) => x=-2 Hence, x=-2 and y=0. So, the correct answer is option 'B'.
