Separation of Naphthalene and Ammonium Chloride
Materials Required:
- Mixture of naphthalene and ammonium chloride
- Beaker
- Funnel
- Filter paper
- Bunsen burner
- Tripod stand
- Wire gauze
- Glass rod
- Watch glass

Procedure:
1. Sublimation of Naphthalene:
- Place the mixture in a beaker and heat it using a Bunsen burner on a tripod stand with wire gauze.
- Naphthalene will sublime, i.e., change from solid to gas directly without passing through the liquid state. The vapors will rise and collect on the cooler surface of a watch glass placed on top of the beaker.
- The ammonium chloride remains in the beaker.
2. Collection of Naphthalene:
- Allow the watch glass to cool down, which will cause the naphthalene to solidify on its surface.
- Scrape off the solid naphthalene using a glass rod.
3. Separation of Ammonium Chloride:
- The remaining solid in the beaker is ammonium chloride.
- Pour the contents of the beaker into a funnel lined with filter paper.
- The filter paper will trap the ammonium chloride while allowing any remaining impurities to pass through.
4. Final Step:
- Scrape off the ammonium chloride from the filter paper to obtain it in pure form.

Conclusion:
Through the process of sublimation, naphthalene can be separated from ammonium chloride, as they have different sublimation temperatures. This experiment demonstrates the principle of sublimation and the physical property differences between the two substances.
