Activity to Demonstrate the Acidity of Non-metal Oxides and Basicity of Metal Oxides:
Materials Required:
- Magnesium ribbon
- Sulphur powder
- Bunsen burner
- Test tubes
- Litmus paper
- Water
Procedure:
- Take a small piece of magnesium ribbon and heat it in a test tube using a Bunsen burner until it starts burning.
- Place the burning magnesium ribbon in another test tube containing water.
- Observe the formation of a white solid at the bottom of the test tube.
- Dip a piece of red litmus paper into the solution. It will turn blue, indicating the basic nature of the magnesium oxide formed.
- Next, take a small amount of sulphur powder and burn it in a test tube using a Bunsen burner.
- Add a few drops of water to the test tube containing the burnt sulphur powder and shake it gently.
- Dip a piece of blue litmus paper into the solution. It will turn red, indicating the acidic nature of the sulphur oxide formed.
Explanation:
Metal oxides, such as magnesium oxide, are basic in nature because they react with water to form metal hydroxides. These metal hydroxides release hydroxide ions (OH-) in solution, making the solution basic. This is evident from the blue litmus paper turning red when it comes in contact with an acidic solution.
On the other hand, non-metal oxides, such as sulphur oxide, are acidic in nature because they react with water to form non-metallic acids. These non-metallic acids release hydrogen ions (H+) in solution, making the solution acidic. This is evident from the red litmus paper turning blue when it comes in contact with a basic solution.
