The glands present in the wall of the stomach that release secretions for digestion of food are called gastric glands. These glands are located in the mucosa layer of the stomach.

1. Hydrochloric Acid (HCl):
- Hydrochloric acid is the main component of gastric juice secreted by the gastric glands. It helps in the breakdown of food and also kills bacteria that enter the stomach with food.
- HCl creates an acidic environment in the stomach, which is necessary for the activation of the enzyme pepsin that breaks down proteins into smaller peptides.
2. Pepsinogen:
- Pepsinogen is an inactive enzyme secreted by the chief cells of the gastric glands. It is converted into its active form, pepsin, in the presence of hydrochloric acid.
- Pepsin is responsible for breaking down proteins into peptides, which are easier to digest.
3. Mucus:
- Mucus is secreted by the goblet cells present in the gastric glands. It forms a protective layer over the stomach lining, preventing it from being damaged by the acidic gastric juice.
- Mucus also helps in lubricating the food and protecting the stomach wall from self-digestion.
