Governors-General of India and their Time Period
The Governors-General of India were the heads of the British administration in India during the British Raj. They were appointed by the British monarch and had extensive powers over the administration of the country.

Lord William Bentinck (1828-1835)
Lord William Bentinck served as the Governor-General of India from 1828 to 1835. He is known for his social reforms, such as abolishing Sati (the practice of a widow immolating herself on her husband's funeral pyre) and introducing English education in India. Bentinck also implemented administrative reforms and reduced corruption in the government.

Lord Dalhousie (1848-1856)
Lord Dalhousie was the Governor-General of India from 1848 to 1856. He is remembered for his extensive infrastructure development projects, including the construction of railways, telegraph lines, and irrigation systems. Dalhousie also introduced the Doctrine of Lapse, which allowed the British to annex states whose rulers died without natural heirs.

Lord Canning (1856-1862)
Lord Canning served as the Governor-General of India from 1856 to 1862. He was in office during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which he successfully suppressed. Canning also oversaw the transfer of power from the East India Company to the British Crown, marking the end of the Company's rule in India.

Lord Mountbatten (1947-1948)
Lord Mountbatten was the last Governor-General of India, serving from 1947 to 1948. He played a crucial role in the partition of India and Pakistan, overseeing the transfer of power and independence of both countries. Mountbatten's tenure marked the end of British rule in India and the beginning of independence for the Indian subcontinent.
