Minimum Bolt Diameter and Thickness Calculation for Clevis

  1. Given:
    • Load, P = 14 kips
    • Shearing stress, τ = 12 ksi
    • Bearing stress, σ = 20 ksi

  2. Calculations:
    • For shearing stress:
      τ = P / (2 * A)
      12 = 14 / (2 * A)
      A = 14 / (2 * 12) = 0.583 sq.in.
    • For bearing stress:
      σ = P / (2 * t * d)
      20 = 14 / (2 * t * d)
      td = 0.35

  3. Minimum Bolt Diameter:
    • Considering standard bolt sizes, the minimum bolt diameter would be 1 inch.

  4. Minimum Yoke Thickness:
    • Substitute d = 1 inch into td = 0.35, we get t = 0.35 inches.
