Diffusion of Waste Products

  • When blood flows through the artificial kidney, waste products such as urea and creatinine diffuse from the blood into the dialysing fluid.
  • This process occurs because there is a concentration gradient between the blood and the dialysing fluid, allowing waste products to move from an area of higher concentration (blood) to an area of lower concentration (dialysing fluid).
  • By continuously circulating fresh dialysing fluid through the artificial kidney, a high concentration gradient is maintained, ensuring efficient removal of waste products.


Therefore, the dialysing fluid plays a crucial role in the artificial kidney by facilitating the diffusion of waste products out of the bloodstream, helping to cleanse the blood of toxins and maintain the body's overall health.
