Secular State:

A secular state is a state that is neutral in matters of religion. It does not favor any particular religion and treats all religions equally. In a secular state, the government does not interfere in religious matters and individuals have the freedom to practice their religion without any discrimination.

Indian Constitution and Secularism:

  • Article 25-28: The Indian Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of religion to all individuals. It allows citizens to profess, practice, and propagate any religion of their choice.
  • Preamble: The Preamble of the Indian Constitution declares India to be a secular state. It ensures that the state does not promote any particular religion and treats all religions equally.
  • Article 14: The Constitution ensures equality before the law for all individuals, irrespective of their religion. It prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion.
  • Freedom of Worship: The Constitution allows individuals the freedom to worship in any manner they choose. It ensures that no one is compelled to pay taxes for the promotion of any particular religion.
  • Separation of State and Religion: The Constitution ensures the separation of state and religion. It prohibits the state from favoring any religion or religious institution.
