    Staphylococcus
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Photosynthetic prokaryotic organism is:-a)Rhizobiumb)Nostocc)Pseudomon...
Nostoc, is genus of blue-green algae with cells arranged in beadlike chains that are grouped together in a gelatinous mass. Like most blue-green algae,Nostoc contains two pigments, blue phycocyanin and red phycoerythrin, as well as chlorophyll, and has the ability to fix nitrogen in specialized cells called heterocysts. This makes them photosynthetic.

Photosynthetic Prokaryotic Organism - Nostoc

Introduction:
Photosynthesis is the process by which organisms convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into glucose and oxygen. Prokaryotes are unicellular organisms that lack a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Among prokaryotes, certain bacteria are capable of performing photosynthesis. One such photosynthetic prokaryotic organism is Nostoc.

Nostoc:
Nostoc is a genus of cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae. It is a filamentous organism that forms gelatinous colonies. Nostoc colonies can be found in diverse habitats such as freshwater, marine, and terrestrial environments. They are often seen as slimy, greenish-black masses in moist areas.

Photosynthesis in Nostoc:
Nostoc is capable of oxygenic photosynthesis, similar to plants and algae. Oxygenic photosynthesis involves the conversion of light energy into chemical energy, which is stored in the form of glucose. The process occurs in specialized structures called thylakoids, which are present in the cytoplasm of Nostoc cells.

Pigments:
Nostoc contains various pigments that enable it to capture light energy from the sun. The primary pigments involved in photosynthesis are chlorophyll a and phycocyanin. Chlorophyll a absorbs light in the red and blue regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, while phycocyanin absorbs light in the blue and green regions. This combination of pigments allows Nostoc to efficiently capture sunlight.

Photosynthetic Reactions:
Photosynthesis in Nostoc can be divided into two main stages: the light-dependent reactions and the light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle).

1. Light-Dependent Reactions:
- Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll and phycocyanin pigments in the thylakoids.
- This energy is used to split water molecules, releasing oxygen and protons.
- The protons are utilized to generate ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the energy currency of the cell.
- Additionally, electron carriers such as NADP+ are reduced to NADPH.

2. Light-Independent Reactions (Calvin Cycle):
- The ATP and NADPH generated in the light-dependent reactions are used to fix carbon dioxide (CO2) into glucose.
- This process occurs in the stroma of the Nostoc cells and is known as the Calvin cycle.

Importance of Nostoc:
Nostoc plays a vital role in various ecosystems. It is commonly found in soil, where it contributes to nitrogen fixation. Nostoc forms symbiotic associations with certain plants, such as liverworts and cycads, providing them with fixed nitrogen. Additionally, Nostoc colonies serve as a food source for various organisms, including insects and small aquatic animals.

Conclusion:
Nostoc is a photosynthetic prokaryotic organism belonging to the cyanobacteria group. It performs oxygenic photosynthesis, utilizing pigments such as chlorophyll a and phycocyanin. Through photosynthesis, Nostoc converts sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into glucose and oxygen. Its ecological importance lies in nitrogen fixation and serving as a food
