A locomotive engine runs at a speed of 50 km/h when no compartment is attached to it. For every new compartment that is attached to it, the speed of the train is reduced by 10% of the earlier speed. At most, how many compartments can be attached so that the train can cover a distance of 180 km in a maximum of 8 hours?
  • a)
    7
  • b)
    5
  • c)
    6
  • d)
    8
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
A locomotive engine runs at a speed of 50 km/h when no compartment is ...
Let n = number of components attached, Vn = speed of train when ‘n ’ compartm ents are attached
V0 = 50
V1 = 45
V2 = 40.5 and so on
At n = 7, we get the answer.

A locomotive engine runs at a speed of 50 km/h when no compartment is ...
Average speed required is 180/8= 22.5 km per h
Now for earvery caoch speed reduced 10%
With out coach speed 50 km pH with 1 c 45 kmph with 2 coach 40.5
3 36.5 4 32.85 5 29.5 6 26.5 7 23
So after 7th coach ट्train will not be able to cover distance in less than 8 hour

A locomotive engine runs at a speed of 50 km/h when no compartment is ...
1) maximum distance that can be travelled by the train before adding any compartment = 50km/h × 8h = 400km
2) now, for every new compartment added, the speed of train is reduced by 10% of earlier speed
3) remember the concept of successive percentage increase? lets apply it here :)
4) 10% decrease in maximum distance that can be travelled due to addition of a compartment can be writtened as - 400km × 0.9 = 360km ( can be covered in 8h with addition of a compartment which caused decrese of 10% )
lets keep adding compartments till we get our answer,
360km × 0.9 = 324km ( can be covered in 8h with addition of two compartments which caused a decrese of 10% and then again 10% with addition of second compartment )
okay, lets be quick cuz we are demonstrating successive percentage change here ~_×
400 × 0.9 × 0.9 × 0.9 × 0.9 × 0.9 × 0.9 × 0.9 = 191.31876km
adding one more compartment will make it unable to cover the desired distance in 8h.
