Chapter 10 Physics Class 10 - Light Reflection and Refraction

Introduction

The chapter deals with the concepts of light reflection and refraction. It explains the laws of reflection and refraction, image formation by mirrors and lenses, and the phenomenon of dispersion.

Laws of Reflection

  • The incident ray, reflected ray, and normal to the surface at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane.

  • The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.

Reflection from Plane Mirrors

  • Plane mirrors form virtual images, which are laterally inverted and of the same size as the object.

  • The distance of the object from the mirror is equal to the distance of the image from the mirror.

Refraction of Light

  • Refraction is the bending of light when it passes from one medium to another of different optical density.

  • The amount of bending depends on the angle of incidence and the refractive indices of the two media.

Laws of Refraction

  • The incident ray, the refracted ray, and the normal to the surface at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane.

  • The ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction is constant. This ratio is called the refractive index of the second medium with respect to the first medium.

Image Formation by Lenses

  • Lenses are of two types, convex and concave.

  • A convex lens forms a real and inverted image when the object is placed beyond the focus, and a virtual and erect image when the object is placed between the focus and the lens.

  • A concave lens always forms a virtual and erect image.

Dispersion of Light

  • Dispersion is the phenomenon of splitting of white light into its seven constituent colors when passed through a prism.

  • The colors of the spectrum are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red (VIBGYOR).

  • The refractive index of a medium is different for different colors, which causes the splitting of light.

Thus, the chapter provides a basic understanding of the behavior of light and its properties.
