Differentiate between A.C and D.C Generator? Explain Fleming's right hand rule.?
Verified Answer
Differentiate between A.C and D.C Generator? Explain Fleming's right h...
A.C generator: It produces an alternating current which reverses its direction continuously.

D.C. generator: To get a direct current, a split-ring type commutator must be used. The generator is thus called a D.C generator.

The only difference between a D.C generator and an A.C generator is that the two ends of the generator coil are linked to the outer circuit. In a D.C generator, we connect the two ends of the coil to a commutator consisting of two half rings of copper. Whereas in an A.C generator, we connect the two ends of the coil to two full rings of copper called slip rings. There is no commutator in an A.C. generator.

Fleming's right-hand rule (for generators) shows the direction of induced current when a conductor moves in a magnetic field. It can be used to determine the direction of current in a generator's windings.

When a conductor such as a wire attached to a circuit moves through a magnetic field, an electric current is induced in the wire due to Faraday's law of induction. The current in the wire can have two possible directions. Fleming's right-hand rule gives which direction the current flows

The right hand is held with the thumb, first finger and second finger mutually perpendicular to each other (at right angles).

1. The thumb is pointed in the direction of motion of the conductor.
2. The first finger is pointed in the direction of the magnetic field. (north to south)
3. Then the second finger represents the direction of the induced or generated current (the direction of the induced current will be the direction of conventional current; from positive to negative)

Fleming's left-hand rule is used for electric motors, while Fleming's right-hand rule is used for electricgenerators. ... Since neither thedirection of motion nor the direction of the magnetic field (inside themotor/generator) has changed, thedirection of the electric current in themotor/generator has reversed.
