brain and spinal cord are the parts of the CNS better known as  central nervous system. brain is kept in a bony box called cranium , and is protected by three membranes called meninges which are , dura matter , arachnoid matter and pia matter . between arachnoid and pia matte is the CSF or cerebrospinal fluid , which provides protection from mechanical shocks.
