In a period, more electrons are added to the same shell as we go from left to right because the atomic number increases. This also increases the attraction between electrons and protons and that's why atomic size decreases. Increasing nuclear charge pulls the electrons closer to the nucleus.

As we move from left to right in a period in modern periodic table, At...
As because Valence electrons across a period increases and thus, attraction between electrons and nucleus also increases due to more no. of electrons and thus it leads to shrinkage of shell size.

To understand it more clearly, electrons get added in the same shell across a period and simultaneously protons also get added , making it more positively charged over a single shell of negative charge.
So, the shell size decreases!
