w xylem is the principle water conducting complex tissue in higher plants . so the water present in the xylem cells will be surely under negative pressure and to just avoid collapsing of walls of xylem cells , lignin is present. liginin is also less hydrophillic then other polysacchrides like cellulose and hemicellulose hence prevents absorption of water by them and allow an efficient pathway for transport of water in xylem.
