Law of independent assortment is based on dihybrid cross. In this, two characters or genes do not influence each other and separate independently during gamete formation. Incomplete dominance is a non-mendelian genetics in which intermediate phenotype is observed for heterozygous organism. During Mendel's study, the trait that did not appear in F generation reappeared in F . Mendel called the substance responsible for each trait as factor. He stated that a character is controlled by a pair of unit factors. Later this factors were known as alleles. Thus, the correct answer is option D.

The correct answer is option D, "a character controlled by a pair of unit factors." This answer further strengthens Mendelism because it relates to the concept of genes and how they control traits in organisms.

Explanation:
- In Mendel's experiments, he observed that traits in pea plants were inherited in a predictable manner. He proposed that there were "unit factors" responsible for each trait, and these factors were passed on from parents to offspring.
- These unit factors are now known as genes, which are segments of DNA that contain the instructions for building and maintaining an organism.
- Each gene has two copies, one inherited from each parent. These copies are called alleles.
- The presence of a pair of alleles for a particular gene determines the expression of a trait. For example, for the trait of flower color in pea plants, there are two alleles: one for purple flowers and one for white flowers. If an individual has two alleles for purple flowers, they will have purple flowers.
- This concept of a character (trait) being controlled by a pair of unit factors (alleles) is a fundamental principle in Mendelian genetics.
- It explains how traits are passed from one generation to the next and how variations in traits can occur.
- This concept also explains why some traits may skip generations or reappear after being absent in a few generations. It depends on the combinations of alleles inherited from the parents.
- Mendel's work laid the foundation for modern genetics and the understanding of how genes and alleles control traits in organisms.
- It is important to note that the other options mentioned, such as the law of independent assortment and incomplete dominance, are also significant in Mendelian genetics. However, option D directly refers to the concept of genes and unit factors, which is a fundamental aspect of Mendelism.
