Cholecystokinin

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a hormone released by the small intestine in response to the presence of fats and proteins in the duodenum. One of the functions of CCK is to stimulate the secretion of pancreatic enzymes from the pancreas to aid in the digestion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

Role in Pancreatic Enzyme Secretion

When food enters the small intestine, especially food with high fat or protein content, CCK is released by the duodenal cells. CCK then travels to the pancreas and binds to receptors on pancreatic acinar cells, which are responsible for producing and secreting digestive enzymes. This binding of CCK to its receptors triggers the release of digestive enzymes such as amylase, lipase, and proteases into the small intestine. These enzymes help break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body.

Overall Function

In summary, cholecystokinin plays a crucial role in the digestive process by stimulating the secretion of pancreatic enzymes from the pancreas. This hormone ensures that the body can efficiently break down and absorb nutrients from food, particularly fats and proteins.
