Activity based questions for Chapter 2 and 3 of Chemistry NCERT book:
Chapter 2: Structure of Atom
1. Experiment to verify the laws of chemical combination
- Gather small pieces of copper and sulphur
- Weigh the two elements separately and record their masses
- Mix the two elements by grinding them together
- Heat the mixture in a test tube until a reaction occurs
- Allow the mixture to cool and weigh it
- Record the new mass of the mixture
- Observe the colour, texture and odour of the mixture
- Interpret the results and verify the law of conservation of mass and the law of definite proportions
2. Determination of the valency of elements
- Collect a few elements like sodium, chlorine, magnesium and oxygen
- Determine the atomic number of each element
- Find out the electronic configuration of each element
- Write the formula of the compounds formed by combining these elements
- Determine the valency of each element by analyzing the formula of the compounds
Chapter 3: Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties
1. Construction of the periodic table
- Collect data on the atomic number, electronic configuration, valency and physical properties of a few elements
- Arrange the elements in order of increasing atomic number
- Observe the periodicity of properties like atomic radius, ionization energy, electronegativity, etc.
- Construct a periodic table by placing the elements in rows and columns based on their properties
- Analyze the arrangement of elements and identify the trends in properties across periods and groups
2. Comparison of the properties of metals and non-metals
- Collect a few samples of metals and non-metals
- Observe the physical properties of each element like colour, lustre, hardness, melting point, boiling point, etc.
- Conduct experiments to determine the chemical properties of each element like reactivity with acids, reactivity with oxygen, etc.
- Compare the properties of metals and non-metals and identify the differences between them
- Analyze the properties of metalloids and classify them as either metals or non-metals based on their properties.
