  • c)
    Grana
  • d)
    Stroma
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Chlorophyll in chloroplasts is located ina)Pyrenoidb)Both grana and st...
Correct Answer :- c
Explanation : Chloroplasts are structurally made up of two components- thylakoids (internal membrane structures) and stroma. Some of the thylakoid membranes are stacked one above the other and are called as grana. The grana contain light trapping pigment chlorophyll and are thus the site of light reaction.

Chlorophyll is an important pigment found in chloroplasts which plays a key role in photosynthesis. Chloroplasts are the organelles present in plant cells that are responsible for photosynthesis. The chlorophyll in chloroplasts is located in grana.

Grana

Grana are the stacks of thylakoid membranes present inside the chloroplasts. These thylakoids contain the pigment chlorophyll which is responsible for absorbing the light energy required for photosynthesis. The grana are the site where the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis take place. The thylakoids are interconnected by the stroma lamellae.

Stroma

The stroma is the fluid-filled region that surrounds the grana inside the chloroplasts. It contains enzymes and other molecules required for the light-independent reactions of photosynthesis. The light-independent reactions take place in the stroma and involve the conversion of carbon dioxide into glucose using the energy generated in the light-dependent reactions.

Pyrenoid

Pyrenoids are structures found in some algae cells that are responsible for storing starch. They are not present in chloroplasts of higher plants.

Conclusion

In conclusion, chlorophyll is located in the thylakoid membranes of grana inside the chloroplasts. The grana are responsible for the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis while the stroma is responsible for the light-independent reactions. Pyrenoids are structures found in some algae cells and not present in higher plant cells.
