Entropy is a measure of the disorder or randomness of a system. In ecosystems, entropy increases as energy is transferred and transformed. This means that the energy becomes less available to do work and is eventually lost as heat.

Examples of First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics in Ecosystem

- The energy from the sun enters the ecosystem and is captured by plants through photosynthesis. This energy is transferred to herbivores when they eat the plants. The energy is then transferred to carnivores when they eat the herbivores. The energy is transformed as it is used by the organisms for metabolism, movement, and growth.
