Why do you think carbohydrates are not digested in the stomach?
Introduction:
Carbohydrates are one of the three main macronutrients necessary for human nutrition, along with fats and proteins. They are an essential source of energy for the body and are found in a wide variety of foods such as grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The process of digesting carbohydrates begins in the mouth and continues in the small intestine, but not in the stomach.

Stomach Function:
The stomach is a muscular organ that plays a vital role in the digestion of food. It receives food from the esophagus and mixes it with digestive juices, including hydrochloric acid and enzymes, to break down proteins and kill harmful bacteria. The stomach's main function is to store food, break it down into smaller particles, and regulate the passage of this partially digested food into the small intestine.

Carbohydrate Digestion in the Mouth:
The digestion of carbohydrates starts in the mouth with the action of an enzyme called amylase, which is present in saliva. Amylase begins the breakdown of complex carbohydrates (starches) into simpler sugars like maltose. This initial digestion process occurs while chewing and mixing food with saliva.

Carbohydrate Digestion in the Small Intestine:
Once the partially digested food, known as chyme, leaves the stomach, it enters the small intestine. In the small intestine, the majority of carbohydrate digestion takes place. The pancreas releases pancreatic amylase, which further breaks down complex carbohydrates into smaller sugar molecules, such as glucose, fructose, and galactose. These smaller molecules can then be absorbed into the bloodstream and used as a source of energy by the body.

Stomach Environment:
The stomach's environment is highly acidic, with a pH ranging from 1.5 to 3.5. This acidic environment is necessary for the activation of enzymes that break down proteins. However, this acidic environment is not suitable for the action of amylase, the enzyme responsible for carbohydrate digestion. Amylase functions best in a more neutral or slightly alkaline environment, with a pH around 6.7 to 7.0.

Conclusion:
Carbohydrates are not digested in the stomach because the enzyme responsible for their digestion, amylase, is not active in the highly acidic environment of the stomach. Instead, carbohydrate digestion primarily occurs in the mouth and continues in the small intestine, where the pH is more suitable for the action of amylase. Understanding the process of carbohydrate digestion helps us appreciate the complex journey our food takes within our bodies to provide us with the energy we need to function.
