In any country which has a number of social groups and cultures, occurence of diversity is obvious.


Sometimes, one group becomes more prominent over the other groups. In this case, we say that one social group has "overlapped" the other. Thus, it creates inequality and leads to social division.

For example: In the United States, there was racial division of the society into "blacks" and "whites". The "whites" got special privileges and overlapped the "blacks".


Sometimes, a large group of people who are united due to having similar opinions on one topic, begin to have differing opinions on other topics. They were united once, but now, get divided due to having different opinions. This is called "cross-cutting" difference.

For example: Catholics and Protestants are both Christians. However, they disagree on many topics related to Christianity. But unlike the case of racial division, here, neither Catholics nor Protestants do not overlap the other.
