Octroi is the charge collected by the local Municipalities when any good enter in their territory. It is either applied on some goods or all the goods based on the decision of the government. It is started in Roman times.

The local Municipality in India levies the Octroi charges when the product enters the state.

Generally it varies from 3 to 6 % of the Product Value.

Gujrat, Maharashtra and Punjab are the only Indian states where OCTROI is applicable at present.

Orissa and Kerala take ENTRY TAX.

Octroi and entry taxes both are indirect taxes but there is a difference between both of them. Entry tax is decided by state government where as octroi is decided by local Municipality.
