The E-Shram Portal, a landmark initiative by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, has emerged as the world’s largest database of unorganized workers, recording over 30 crore registrations by December 2024. Launched on August 26, 2021, the portal aims to empower workers in sectors such as agriculture, construction, domestic work, and gig economy by providing access to welfare schemes, social security, and employment opportunities.
The portal’s streamlined registration process requires Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers and minimal documentation, ensuring inclusivity and ease of use. Workers can self-register online or seek assistance at Common Service Centres (CSCs) and State Seva Kendras.
Empowering the Backbone of the Economy
The unorganized workforce, comprising daily wagers, self-employed individuals, and gig workers, represents a significant portion of India’s economy. Through the E-Shram Portal, these workers gain access to benefits like pensions under the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) scheme, healthcare via Ayushman Bharat, and financial support through schemes like PM-SVANidhi.
The portal has also been integrated with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, creating a synergy between workforce planning and infrastructure development. This integration allows registered workers to access job opportunities linked to large-scale projects, ensuring equitable economic participation.
Global Recognition and Expanding Horizons
The E-Shram Portal has received international acclaim for its innovative approach to workforce management. India showcased the portal’s success at the 112th International Labour Conference in Geneva and during its G20 Presidency.
The initiative’s integration with platforms like the National Career Service (NCS) Portal and the Skill India Digital portal ensures skill enhancement and employment opportunities for workers. Additionally, the “One-Stop-Solution” launched in October 2024 consolidates multiple welfare schemes, enabling workers to view benefits availed through the portal.
States Leading the Way
Uttar Pradesh tops the list with over 8.3 crore registrations, followed by Bihar (2.9 crore) and West Bengal (2.6 crore). These numbers highlight the widespread reach and impact of the initiative.
Building a Resilient Workforce
With an average of 60,000 registrations daily in October 2024, the E-Shram Portal continues to bridge gaps in the labor market. By integrating unorganized workers into the formal economy and enhancing their access to welfare schemes, the portal is not just a database but a lifeline for millions of workers.
The E-Shram Portal stands as a testament to India’s commitment to building an inclusive and resilient labor ecosystem, transforming the lives of its unorganized workforce.
