Ethnocentrism: Understanding Cultural Bias

Ethnocentrism refers to the tendency of individuals or groups to view their own culture as superior to others, leading to the belief that their own cultural norms, values, and practices are the standard by which all other cultures should be measured. It involves judging and evaluating other cultures based on the standards and perspectives of one's own culture. Ethnocentrism can manifest itself in various forms, such as cultural prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination.

Causes and Effects of Ethnocentrism:

  • Socialization: Ethnocentrism is learned and reinforced through socialization processes, such as family, education, and media.
