Verified Answer
Which of the following is less general in characters as compared to ge...
If you know one basic concept I.e. a genus is a group of species which are similar to each other.
Take example of Solanum genus. It has various species viz Nigrum, Melongena, Tuberosus, etc
Now if I refer to the Genus I.e. Solanum, I may be referring to any one of those three. So I'm giving you a less specific/more general reference.
But if I refer to the Species, say Nigrum, I would be giving you a more specific/less general reference.

Species and Family: A Comparison

Introduction
In the field of biological classification, the hierarchy is organized into several levels, from broad to specific. Two important levels in this hierarchy are species and family. While both species and family are classifications within the hierarchical system, they differ in their level of specificity and the number of organisms they encompass.

Species
Species is a fundamental unit of classification in biological taxonomy. It refers to a group of organisms that share similar characteristics and can interbreed to produce fertile offspring. Species is the most specific level of classification and represents a distinct type of organism. Each species is unique and different from other species.

Family
Family is a higher level of classification in the hierarchical system. It represents a larger group of related organisms that share common characteristics and ancestry. It is a broader category than species and includes multiple species within it. Families consist of several genera, which then contain multiple species.

Differences
Species and family differ in terms of their level of specificity and the number of organisms they encompass. Here are some key differences:

Specificity:
- Species: Species is the most specific level of classification. It represents a distinct type of organism.
- Family: Family is a higher level of classification and is less specific than species. It represents a group of related organisms rather than a distinct type.

Number of Organisms:
- Species: Each species represents a single type of organism. There can be multiple species within a family.
- Family: A family includes multiple species within it. It encompasses a larger group of related organisms.

Example:
To illustrate the difference, let's consider the example of the common domestic cat (Felis catus). The species name "catus" represents a specific type of cat. However, the family to which the domestic cat belongs is Felidae, which includes other species of cats like lions, tigers, and cheetahs. While the species represents a specific type of cat, the family represents a broader group of related organisms.

Conclusion
In summary, species and family are different levels of classification within the hierarchical system. Species is the most specific level and represents a distinct type of organism, while family is a higher level and encompasses multiple species. Species is less general in characters as compared to the genus because it represents a specific type of organism, whereas family represents a broader group of related organisms.
