Fertilization is the fusion of the male gamete and female gamete to form a zygote in plants. In flowering plants, the fertilization is consequently termed as double fertilization as the two male nuclei in the pollen grain fuse with the egg and the polar nuclei to form the diploid zygote and the triploid endosperm.

Double fertilization in angiosperms occurs when two male gametes from a pollen grain fuse with two different female gametes in the ovule. This process is unique to angiosperms and results in the formation of a zygote and endosperm.
Process of Double Fertilization:
1. Pollination: The process of transfer of pollen grains from anther to stigma is called pollination. Pollination can be of two types, self-pollination and cross-pollination.
2. Germination of Pollen Grain: After pollination, the pollen grain germinates on the stigma and produces a pollen tube.
3. Entry of Pollen Tube: The pollen tube grows down the style and enters the ovary.
4. Double Fertilization: When the pollen tube reaches the ovule, it releases two male gametes. One of these gametes fuses with the egg cell to form a zygote (2n). The other male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei to form a triploid (3n) endosperm.
5. Development of Zygote: The zygote develops into an embryo, which is the future plant.
6. Development of Endosperm: The endosperm acts as a source of nutrients for the developing embryo and the seedling.
Conclusion:
Double fertilization is the unique characteristic of angiosperms that results in the formation of both embryo and endosperm. The process involves the fusion of one male gamete with the egg cell to form the zygote and the other male gamete with the two polar nuclei to form the endosperm.

In angiosperms, after the entry of pollen tube into the ovule it releases the 2 male gametes one of the male gamete moves towards egg cell and fuses with it which results in the formation of diploid zygote. The other male gamete moves towards the polar nuclei and fuse to form primary endosperm nucleus which is called triple fusion, as it involves fusion of 3-haploid nuclei.Since two types of fusion takes place I.e.;syngamy and triple fusion ,the process is called double fertilization.
