The book 'Engineering Mechanics' by Timoshenko is good. But not recommended for first time learner. The approach in this book is purely Scalar approach. The present day trend is Vector approach. Scalar approach is good for 2 D problems. Whereas Vector approach is recommended for 3 D problems. In Vector approach, the problem reduces to a problem in mathematics.
