Problem: Find the distance between two stations if a train starts from rest from a station with acceleration 0.2 m/s square on a single track and then comes to rest after attaining maximum speed on another station due to retardation of 0.4 m/s square if total time spent is half hour. Neglect length of train.

Solution:
Let us assume the distance between the two stations as 'd'.
Given,
Initial velocity (u) = 0
Acceleration (a) = 0.2 m/s²
Retardation (b) = 0.4 m/s²
Total time (t) = 30 minutes = 1800 seconds

Using the equation of motion v = u + at, we can find the velocity of the train when it reaches the maximum speed.
v = u + at
v = 0 + 0.2 × t
v = 0.2t

Now, the distance covered during acceleration can be found using the equation of motion s = ut + 0.5at².
s1 = ut + 0.5at²
s1 = 0 + 0.5 × 0.2 × (t/2)² [As the train accelerates for half the time]
s1 = 0.01t²

Similarly, the distance covered during retardation can be found using the equation of motion s = vt - 0.5bt².
s2 = vt - 0.5bt²
s2 = 0.2t × (t/2) - 0.5 × 0.4 × (t/2)² [As the train retards for half the time]
s2 = 0.05t²

The total distance covered by the train (excluding its length) is the sum of s1 and s2.
d = s1 + s2
d = 0.01t² + 0.05t²
d = 0.06t²
d = 0.06 × 1800²
d = 194400m

Therefore, the distance between the two stations is 194400m or 194.4km.
