Helen Keller was born on 27 June 1880 in Tuscumbia in Alabama. Her father, Arthur Hill. Keller, was a descendant of Carpet Keller who was native of Switzerland. Helen's mother was Kate Adams who was Arthur's second wife and was many years younger. At the age of nineteen months, Helen became very ill with brain fever. When fever subsided, Helen was left deaf and blind forever. Helen's handicap had made her temperamental and restless child. She would show her anger on her companion Martha, on her dog Belle and even on her doll Nancy. She would feel jealous of her sister didn't like her presence. She even locked her mother in the kitchen and later Miss Sullivan in a room. Helen quite eager to learn. Despite her handicap she had learnt some crude signs of communication and also how to fold clothes. Later, she showed exceptional capabilities for learning and very soon she could learn to read, write or even speak. Halen loved nature beyond anything. It always pleased her to be in the company of flowers, birds and butterflies. The fragrance of flowers, rustling wind, flowing streams, buzzing bees and humming birds would often attract her attention. Deprived of her sense to see and hear, Helen had an exceptional sense of smell and touch. Just by smelling she could identify her surroundings. In fact, she was expert in odours. Similarly, she possessed a strong sense of touch, too. Most of her learning took place because of her sense of touch only. She loved feeling the objects with her fingers. Throughout her autobiography, Helen express her deep gratitude for her teacher Miss Sullivan. Helen had learnt almost everything from her teacher and Miss Sullivan had always been protective and affectionate towardsher. Helen is deeply attached to her teacher and considers her to be an inseparable part of her life. Despite her disabilities, Helen was an adventurous girl. She braved thunderstorm easily and didn't fear plunging into sea waters. She loved tobogganing and didn't fear walking on the narrow bridges. Helen Keller is a legendary character who will continue to inspire millions of years to come.
