Importance of regional political parties?
There is no definite roles assigned to regional parties. But regional parties have taken upon themselves to believe the following to be their rolls.

There is no regional parties perse. Election Commission recognizes only national and state parties. State parties are called regional parties.
The birth of regionalism started in Tamil Nadu with DMK, in 1967. The dravidian, parties of Tamil Nadu occupied the entire space. Congress itself has become a non entity. Seeing the success in Tamil Nadu many regional parties took its birth after the fall of V.P.Singh. SP, RJD, BSP, RLD, INLD, JDU, JDS, etc.
All these regional parties came into existence to cater to regional aspirations of the people. But each leader of these parties spearheaded the cause of a particular dominant caste. Thereby brought imbalance in the society. Also irrespective of the regional parties, they became very corrupt and arrogant.
Instead of balanced development of their region or state, these parties are after power. The regional parties at one time thought that it bis their birthright to be the head of their state. Every regional party has become a dynasty oriented one. These parties want the people to believe that they are born to rule.
Many of these arrogant regional parties are now languishing. But still persisting by fighting elections.
The regional parties after coming into existence started occupying the Congress space. Gradually Congress started weakening. At one stage regionalism gained credibility, that national parties started to lose heavily in those states where regional parties are strong. That is the reason Congress is no more present in many states.
The central government did not attend to regional aspirations, social and cultural needs, paving way for regional parties. Even these regional parties are losing out to national parties because because they have become too corrupt and frudalistic.
