Uranium-235 is the only isotope existing in nature to any appreciable extent that is fissile, however uranium-233 is a fissile isotope of uranium that can be bred from thorium-232 as part of the thorium fuel cycle. These are the only two important fissile isotopes of uranium. Certain others are fertile in that they can be used to breed fissile isotopes of other elements.
While uranium-238 is fissionable by fast neutrons it cannot support a chain reaction because inelastic scattering reduces neutron energy below the range where fast fission of one or more next-generation nuclei is probable.
