The equation for the reaction taking place in the pentane-oxygen fuel cell is as follows:

C5H12 + 8O2 → 5CO2 + 6H2O

Step 1: Calculate the standard free energy change (ΔG˚) for the reaction.

ΔG˚ = ΣnΔG˚f(products) - ΣnΔG˚f(reactants)
ΔG˚ = [5(-394.4 kJ/mol) + 6(-237.2 kJ/mol)] - [(-8.2 kJ/mol)]
ΔG˚ = -2863.2 kJ/mol
