The second maturation division of the mammalian ovum occurs after the ovum has been penetrated by a sperm. This is the process of fertilization. Let us understand this in detail.

Fertilization

Fertilization is the process by which a sperm joins an ovum to form a zygote. This process occurs in the fallopian tube after ovulation. The ovum is surrounded by a layer of cells called the corona radiata and a protective layer called the zona pellucida. The sperm needs to penetrate these layers to reach the ovum.

Penetration of Sperm

The sperm reaches the ovum by swimming through the female reproductive tract. Once it reaches the ovum, it binds to the zona pellucida and releases enzymes that digest the zona pellucida, allowing the sperm to penetrate it. This triggers the release of cortical granules from the ovum that harden the zona pellucida, preventing the entry of more sperm.

Fusion of Nuclei

Once the sperm has penetrated the ovum, the two haploid nuclei, one from the sperm and one from the ovum, fuse to form a diploid zygote. This is the second maturation division of the ovum.

Conclusion

Thus, the second maturation division of the mammalian ovum occurs after the ovum has been penetrated by a sperm. This is the process of fertilization where the haploid nuclei of the sperm and ovum fuse to form a diploid zygote.
