Chromosome Count in Different Cells of a Moss Plant
In a moss plant, the number of chromosomes in its leaf is 30. Let's determine the number of chromosomes in the neck canal cell, spores, and capsule cell of the sporophyte.
Neck Canal Cell:
The neck canal cell is a part of the female gametophyte in moss. Since it is a haploid cell, it will contain half the number of chromosomes found in the leaf. Therefore, the number of chromosomes in the neck canal cell will be 30/2 = 15.
Spores:
Spores are also haploid cells in moss plants. They are produced through meiosis in the sporangium and are responsible for the dispersal and reproduction of the plant. Hence, the number of chromosomes in spores will be the same as in the leaf, which is 30.
Capsule Cell of Sporophyte:
The sporophyte generation in moss plants is diploid, as it arises from the fusion of male and female gametes. The capsule cell is a part of the sporophyte and will therefore have double the number of chromosomes compared to the leaf. Hence, the number of chromosomes in the capsule cell of sporophyte will be 30 x 2 = 60.
