In a deflection magnetometer experiment in tan A position, a short-bar magnet placed at 18 cm from the centre of the compass needle produces a deflection of 30° . If another magnet of same length but 16 times pole strength as that of first magnet is placed in tan B position at 36cm, the deflection will be
  • a)
  • b)
    30°
  • c)
    45°
  • d)
    60°
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

°. If the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field is 4.5 x 10^-5 T, calculate the magnetic moment of the bar magnet.

Solution:

Given:
Distance between bar magnet and compass needle, r = 18 cm = 0.18 m
Deflection produced, θ = 30°
Horizontal component of earth's magnetic field, B = 4.5 x 10^-5 T

We know that,

tan θ = (μ/2π) x (Bh/Br)

where μ is the magnetic moment of the bar magnet, Bh is the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field, and Br is the magnetic field produced by the bar magnet at a distance r from its centre.

Rearranging the above equation, we get:

μ = (2π x r x tan θ) / Bh

Substituting the given values, we get:

μ = (2π x 0.18 x tan 30°) / 4.5 x 10^-5

μ = 3.77 x 10^-3 A m^2

Therefore, the magnetic moment of the bar magnet is 3.77 x 10^-3 A m^2.

In magnetometer the angle does not depend on pole strength it depend on radius no of turns and magnetic field and current so according to question if pole strength is 16 times no effect so angle same
