**Mitochondria and Chloroplasts: Semi-autonomous organelles**

Mitochondria and chloroplasts are both semi-autonomous organelles present in eukaryotic cells. These organelles have their own DNA and are able to replicate independently of the cell's nuclear DNA. They are believed to have originated from ancient prokaryotic cells that were engulfed by ancestral eukaryotic cells through endosymbiosis.

**Semi-Autonomous Organelles:**
Mitochondria and chloroplasts are considered semi-autonomous because they have their own genetic material and can carry out some of their own functions, but they are still dependent on the host cell for certain resources and regulatory mechanisms. They are not completely independent entities like prokaryotic cells.

**Formation by Division:**
Both mitochondria and chloroplasts are formed through division of pre-existing organelles. This process, known as binary fission, is similar to the way bacteria reproduce. The organelles grow and replicate their DNA independently, and then divide into two daughter organelles. This division process allows for the inheritance of the organelles from one generation to the next.

**DNA and Protein Synthesis:**
Mitochondria and chloroplasts contain their own DNA, separate from the nuclear DNA of the host cell. This DNA encodes for some of the proteins necessary for the organelles to function. However, mitochondria and chloroplasts lack the complete set of genes required for protein synthesis. They rely on the host cell's nuclear DNA for the synthesis of many of their proteins. The nuclear DNA encodes for proteins that are imported into the organelles and are essential for their proper functioning.

**Correct Answer Explanation:**
The correct answer is option (c) - (a) is true but (b) is false. This is because mitochondria and chloroplasts are indeed semi-autonomous organelles, as they have their own DNA and are able to replicate independently. However, they do contain DNA and are capable of carrying out some protein synthesis, although they rely on the host cell for a significant portion of their protein synthesis.
